Mālama Our Hawaiian Monk Seals

The Hawaiian Monk Seal has some fun names, including ʻīlioholoikekai (the dog running in the sea), ʻīlioholoikauaua (dog running in the rough sea), and nā mea hulu (furry ones). In the days of old Hawaiʻi, it must have been fun watching these sea dogs rolling in the surf. Today, we are very lucky to see a Hawaiian monk seal or two on the beach or swimming in the ocean because they are very endangered. In fact, they are among the most endangered animals in the world! While we may see more of them in the main Hawaiian islands, their overall population is dropping every year. They face many threats but there are things WE can do to help save these beautiful creatures so that they will be around for hundreds of years to come. Be part of the solution, not the problem, and teach others. We’ll help you find out how.

Voices of the Youth

I feel that they are very endangered and they really need to be protected. . . not to be harmed anymore.

Changing Perspectives

people don’t really know how human contact can affect their nature. So people feel like they can just go near a monk seal and just like touch it, feed it or anything like that.
